Skin Cancer, Precautions and Medical Services in Clinics

SKIN CANCER: It refers to the abnormal growth of skin cells. Growth of abnormal tissues in skin develops on skin exposed to the sun, often. Skin exposure to sunlight is the main cause of skin cancer diseases. However, the common form of cancer can also occur on areas of skin that are not in general exposed to sunlight.

TYPES OF SKIN CANCER: There are three major types of skin cancer.
•    Basal cell carcinoma

•    Squamous cell carcinoma

•    Melanoma

It is important to take proper precautions to reduce risk of skin cancer. Some important points are:
•    Avoid skin exposure to sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In sunny days, when sunrays are too strong, protect your skin. Even when the day is not too sunny, UV rays are present and can harm skin so be careful.

•    Use clothing to cover your exposed skin in sun. Use sunglasses and hat.

•    Apply sunscreen lotion with SPF 30 and more.

•    Know your skin and check skin for suspicious changes. Early detection of skin cancer can significantly help in curing it. And self-check up for skin cancer helps in detecting any traces of cancer at its earliest stages.

•    Avoid tanning-booth. Also avoid artificial tanning-methods such as use of tanning-pills and tablets. These can increase risk of developing skin cancer.

Primarily, skin cancer develops on areas of sun-exposed skin. The areas can be the scalp, face, lips, ears, neck, chest, arms and hands, and on the legs. It can also develop on areas that rarely see the light of day such as palms, beneath fingernails or toenails, and genital area. That is why medical professionals and practitioners suggest to get full body check up regularly and to keep eyes on any changes in skin as well. Skin cancer is not limited to any skin type it can affect people of all skin tones, including those with darker complexions. One thing to make a note here is, when melanoma occurs in people with dark skin tones, it is more likely to occur in areas that are not normally exposed to the sun. In Skin Cancer Clinics, experts and skin-cancer-surgeons offer variety of medical services for skin cancer patients. Right from skin cancer screening to skin cancer surgeries are offered. There are many clinics and hospitals where bulk billing skin cancer check-ups and services are offered to patients/ people.

Skin cancer and precautions

There are some important precautions that everyone must follow to be escaped from skin cancer diseases. The ways to prevent skin cancer are:

•    Number one: Avoid skin exposure to sun and wind
By avoiding enough skin exposure in sunlight can help in eliminating chances of developing skin cancer. Especially when the sun’s UV rays are the strongest or when UV index is 3 or more, reduce skin exposure.

•    Number two: Cover or shade your skin
Works cannot be avoided just because the day is too hot and too sunny. But we can always protect our exposed skin areas by seeking shade under trees, or by covering skin with clothing. We can use umbrella as well. Sunglasses and hats are options also.

•    Number three: Beware of clouds
Even if it the day is not too sunny, and sunlight or sunrays are not too strong still UV rays are present and can harm our skin. For information, up to 80% of the sun’s rays can penetrate light clouds, mist and fog. And remember that water, sand, snow and concrete can reflect up to 80% of the sun’s damaging rays as well.

•    Number four: Use the Sunscreen
Before you go out in the sun, during day time, always use sunscreens with an SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of 15 or more. Consider SPF product that contain both UVA and UVB protection.

•    Number five: Do avoid tanning products and sunlamps
People love tanned skin. So they use tanning-pills, tablets. They also go to beaches so that they can get tan-skin. This increases chances of developing skin cancer.

•    Number Six: Protect kids and children
Keep children, kids and toddlers away from direct sunlight. Skin of babies is more sensitive. Their arms and legs should be covered when out in the sun. There are some products available containing sun protection factor and UV and UB rays’ protection factor for kids and children as well.

•    Number Seven: Skin Cancer Check
It is very important to have regular full body check up. You need to examine your moles and freckles every month to check for any changes. Check if there are any changes in your skin such as mole(s) are developing, or a mole or discoloration that appears suddenly or begins to change and a sore that does not heal and areas of skin that are red and bumpy, bleed or are itchy. If you any of such changes you should immediately seek medical attention.
